About
On January 14, 1941, Victor de Laveleye, head of the Belgian division of the BBC, made an announcement over the radio airwaves to countries occupied by the Nazis. De Laveleye called on the people to resist the Germans by writing the letter ‘V’ on the streets and buildings to remind the Germans that they were not welcome or safe. The ‘V’ was a symbol of defiance and translated across languages as it stood for ‘victory’ in French and ‘freedom’ in Dutch. The initial effort to push back against the Nazis was so successful that the BBC started the ‘V for Victory’ campaign. British Prime Minister Winston Churchill endorsed ‘V for Victory’ in a speech on July 19, 1941 and began using the ‘V’ hand sign whenever in public. ‘V for Victory’ went on to become one of the most impactful and enduring symbols of the war. It mobilized and unified the Allies to ultimately win the war and defeat fascism.
However, fascism is on the rise again and threatening our freedoms and democracy. Americans must unite as one to push back against this dangerous surge of hate, lies, and violence by voting for Kamala Harris. Harris will provide democratic and economic stability, keep our alliances intact while pushing back against dictators, and represent and fight for all Americans, not just those who agree with her. In addition, Harris will restore abortion rights by codifying Roe v. Wade, pass the Bipartisan Border Security Bill to solve the immigration crisis, and build three million new homes and rental units to end the national housing supply crisis. Harris will also make billionaires pay their fair share, cut taxes for over 100 million middle class Americans, protect Social Security, Medicare, and the Affordable Care Act, all while abiding by the Constitution. Harris stands for everything the ‘V for Victory’ campaign stood for: freedom, unity, peace, equality, and victory. Today, ‘V’ can also stand for vote. Vote for Harris to save democracy and once again ensure victory over fascism.
